How I Spent My Nine Hour Flight Delay (in us dollars)
I was due. If you travel a lot, you know that for every few on time arrivals, there's going to be a delay. It's simple odds. You hope it's just an extra hour - a plane late to arrive from out of town, a broken seat - not a full scale de-planing, airport hotel voucher disaster. It's almost hard for me to enjoy those early arrivals because I can smell impending doom around the corner. It smells like a trans-continental airplane lavatory before descent. My comeuppance came in the form of a 9 hour flight delay alone with Cal at LAX, direct from a morning show appearance after a whirlwind press week. Luckily, it's really hard to get too down when you've got a six-month-old looking up at you, tossing a giggle as if to say "but I get another whole day alive?! This is amazing!!". So instead of crumbling into a corner under the pressure of entertaining and sustaining an infant until our projected midnight arrival home, I did what any sensible modern mom does under pressure; I went shopping!
Here's the cost of Terminal Happiness in USD.
$4 - Cold brew coffee from Klatch
$34 - Cell phone charger and a copy of Vanity Fair from Sunset News
$18 - Salmon and polenta plate from BLD in terminal 7, the best food terminal at LAX
$28 - Clinique skin care set from Duty Free to wash the morning show makeup off the face and feel like a human again
$45 - Alaska Airlines Board Room pass so your baby can play with a communal abacus while you charge your phone and whine about your predicament on the internet
$12 - USB adapter from the Alaska Board Room when you realize the charger you just purchased doesn't have a wall outlet and your baby is playing too happily with that communal abacus to go back a terminal to return it
$10 - Enormous cup of Yogurtland to accompany you on your 'go the f to sleep' stroller walk around the terminals
$0 - Glass of merlot from the Board Room once baby finally goes the f to sleep
$100 - Overnight fee to your dream nanny for picking you up at the airport at midnight and staying 'til morning to get you settled, thereby saving your weekend
